If you’re finding that the quest to lose weight and live a healthier life is more of a battle than a journey, it might just be that you haven’t found your motivator yet.

Motivation is a huge factor in what makes us succeed rather than fail, and in what makes us a long term success rather than keeping our accomplishments short term.

But what do you do if you’re missing motivation? Well, you try and find it. If you’re looking to motivate yourself, then there are a few things that you need to keep in mind….

Find What Motivates You…

Believe it or not, we do all have motivation, it just might not be working for you in the right way. Think about why you do the things that you do. All habits are based on some kind of motivation.

Maybe you like to eat chocolate. Why? You eat it because it makes you feel good. It makes you feel good because it contains dopamine. So dopamine is your motivation, and you can get that from seeing friends, sleeping or exercising as well as from eating chocolate.

You need to identify what motivates you to do things. Whether it’s avoiding pain, getting that dopamine fix, or looking good, when you find out what your motivators are then you can apply them to your healthier lifestyle.

Remember that It’s Personal…

What works for some doesn’t work for others. Motivation is a very personal thing. If you’re motivated by wanting to look fantastic then sure, pinning great looking models on your fridge might be enough to stop you binge eating.

But if your motivation is comfort, then those pictures are going to do nothing to stop you opening the fridge. If you have a hard time identifying what motivates you, try keeping a diary for a week and write down what you do, what you eat but most importantly why, what you’re feeling.

Be Specific in Your Goals…

It’s very difficult to stay motivated for non-concrete goals. Rather than making vast, unreachable and impractical goals like “I want to lose weight” try making things more achievable.

The goal of wanting to lose five pounds this month is not only achievable but also motivating. By setting a goal that you can reach and then reaching it, your motivation stays pumped up and helps you reach your next goal.

Unachievable or unrealistic goals simply result in you motivation going on vacation. It’s tough to be motivated when you’re never achieving anything.

Recognise that You Will Fail…

One of the biggest problems that most people have when maintaining a healthy lifestyle is that they make a mistake and then write off the whole day, or even the whole week.

You need to understand that one mistake doesn’t over turn everything else that you have done. Okay, maybe you ate that slice of cake, but that doesn’t mean that you should forget about your whole diet plan for the day.

Mistakes are a part of learning, and they’re going to happen. Recognising this and still being able to continue with your healthy plan is part of what will make you a success.

Be Prepared…

A great way to keep your motivation going is to be prepared for anything that can derail it. There are numerous ways that you can do this.

Have some excuses ready for when you’re offered a slice of cake, know that you want to eat junk food when you have PMS so don’t keep it in the house, know what the healthy options are if you need to stop at a fast food restaurant.

The more prepared you are, the stronger your will power will be, and the more powerful your motivation will be.

After you overcome one obstacle, your motivation will soar.
